Peach Trees on Agnomy

Peach trees are planted as bare-root stock in late winter to early spring, while dormant and once the ground is workable and frost risk is low. Bare-root planting during dormancy gives the best establishment. Deep, regular watering through the first growing season builds the strong root system the tree needs.

Commercial peach trees are usually spaced 12 to 16 feet apart depending on rootstock and training system, with high-density home plantings as tight as 10 feet. Adequate spacing keeps air moving through the canopy, which reduces disease pressure. Final spacing balances sunlight, airflow, and room for equipment.

Peaches are pruned to an open-center, or vase, shape with three to five scaffold branches angled around 45 degrees so sunlight reaches the whole canopy. In California the main prune happens in early spring, often February as buds swell, not in midwinter. Mature trees have about 40 percent of their growth removed yearly because peaches fruit on one-year-old wood.

Peach trees typically begin bearing in their second or third year and reach full production by years four to six. They are relatively short-lived for orchard trees, productive for roughly 12 to 15 years. Annual pruning to renew fruiting wood is what sustains crop size and quality over that span.
