San Angelo is the sheep and goat capital of the United States. The area supports roughly 20 percent of the national sheep population and about 90 percent of the country's Angora goats, which is why Texas A&M sited the Bill Sims Wool and Mohair Research Laboratory here in 1985. Producers Livestock Auction, operating since 1954, is one of the largest sheep and goat auctions in the world, holding sheep and goat sales every Tuesday.
Tom Green County counted 1,392 farms across 937,713 acres in 2022, selling $101.98 million in agricultural products, 75 percent of it livestock. Inventory included 33,927 sheep and lambs, 19,622 goats, and 30,095 cattle, making this a genuine sheep and goat county rather than a cattle-only one. Land is dominated by rangeland: 708,815 acres of pasture against 189,638 acres of cropland, with only about 3 percent irrigated.
