Land preparation readies a field for planting through steps like deep ripping to break hardpan, discing to break up clods and mix in amendments, leveling for even irrigation, and final bed shaping. The exact sequence depends on the crop and the field's condition. The goal is good soil structure, drainage, and a precise grade.

Deep ripping uses heavy shanks to fracture the soil profile two to three feet down, and slip plows pulled by large dozers can reach five to six feet to shatter hardpan and buried sand layers. This opens the soil so roots and water penetrate, which is especially important before planting orchards and vineyards. It is usually a one-time pass before establishment.

Laser leveling is typically redone every two to four years, often by a contract leveling company, because tillage and irrigation gradually shift the grade. Precise leveling makes flood and furrow irrigation far more uniform and water-efficient. Fields graded by laser consistently outperform those leveled by less precise methods.

Land prep is done ahead of the planting window so the soil has time to settle, usually in the dry months before a winter or spring planting. Orchard and vineyard ground is often ripped, amended, disced, and leveled the season before trees or vines go in. Working dry soil avoids compaction and leaves a clean, firm seedbed or planting site.
