Irrigation pumps should be tested every three to five years to catch efficiency losses before they raise energy costs. A pump test measures flow rate, discharge pressure, water level, and power use to calculate overall pumping plant efficiency. Common warning signs include reduced flow or pressure, higher energy bills, unusual noise or vibration, frequent cycling, and air or sand in the water. Pump efficiency testing measures the water delivered against the energy used, giving an overall pumping plant efficiency percentage.
