Weslaco sits in Hidalgo County, the top Texas county for both vegetables and fruit. County growers sold $386 million of agricultural products in 2022, up 24 percent from 2017, with crops making up 94 percent of sales. Hidalgo ranked first among all Texas counties for vegetables, melons, and potatoes at $191.4 million and first for fruits, tree nuts, and berries at $55.8 million.
Corn, cotton, harvested vegetables, grain sorghum, and sugarcane lead by acreage, and 124,154 acres are irrigated with Rio Grande water allocated month by month by the TCEQ Rio Grande Watermaster. Grapefruit accounts for roughly 70 percent of the state's 27,000 acres of citrus, nearly all of it in the Lower Valley. The Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center has been headquartered in Weslaco since 1948 and serves as the District 12 Extension administrative office.
