Spreaders handle dry granular fertilizer, lime, gypsum, compost, manure, and some cover crop seed, depending on the equipment. Spread width varies by material, often around 100 feet for fertilizer but less for lime, gypsum, and compost. Material density and particle size determine the settings and pattern.

Variable rate spreading uses GPS and prescription maps to change the application rate automatically as the spreader moves across a field. Each zone gets the amount its soil test calls for instead of one flat rate. This reduces waste, evens out fertility, and keeps over-application out of areas that do not need it.

Spreader calibration ensures the actual rate matches the target rate, so nutrients are not wasted by over-application or yield lost from under-application. Calibration also sets an even spread pattern to avoid streaking across the field. It should be checked for each material since density and flow differ.

Modern spreaders with proper calibration and GPS control apply materials accurately and evenly, with spinner and pattern settings tuned to each product. Wind, material moisture, and uneven particle size can affect the pattern. Overlapping passes and rate control help keep coverage consistent across the field.
