Prosser is the Benton County seat and the research heart of Washington wine country. The WSU Irrigated Agriculture Research and Extension Center here was established by legislative mandate in 1919 and now hosts 16 research and extension faculty alongside USDA-ARS and WSDA plant certification programs. Prosser sits inside the Yakima Valley AVA, designated in 1983 as Washington's first American Viticultural Area.
Benton County sold $1.21 billion in agricultural products in 2022, third among Washington counties, with crops making up 89 percent of that value. Wheat leads by acreage at nearly 116,000 acres, followed by vegetables, potatoes at 41,910 acres, and grapes at 29,910 acres. Much of it is watered by the Roza Irrigation District, whose junior, pro-ratable water right is cut back first in drought years.
